“Taking DWW Engineering further…” – An Interview with Tony Whittred

“What inspired you to buy DWW?”

Since acquiring DWW in 2016, we couldn’t be happier with how the business and team have evolved. My family has always been in business; it’s in my blood. I’ve always aspired to lead a company, and DWW is certainly meeting those expectations.

After graduating from QUT as a Mechanical Engineer, I gained valuable experience in fabrication shops across Brisbane. I then moved to Mackay to join the mining industry, where I managed trades, maintenance programs, annual shutdowns, and capital projects. By the mid-2000s, with a wealth of knowledge under my belt, I decided to dive into my first business venture by investing in a fabrication business in Clermont.

Reflecting on that early venture, it’s clear that it came with its own set of challenges. Despite some interim successes, the partnership didn’t work out, and I eventually dissolved it. However, after some reflection, I was determined to pursue my ambition back in Brisbane.

When DWW became available, I was prepared. I had more experience and had done my homework thoroughly this time [laughing]. While the business had a solid tenure, it had also faced tough times, and previous owners had considered shutting it down. Despite these challenges, DWW had significant potential! It was a business where I didn’t have to start from scratch. With its strong foundations, dedicated team, and robust client base, DWW ticked all the boxes.

Looking back at my first few months at DWW, I have to smile. I admit I was a bit naïve [laughing]. Despite my background and engineering expertise, I wasn’t fully prepared for the steep learning curve ahead. It has been a significant personal challenge, but I’m now stronger and wiser because of it.

I have a clear vision for DWW, and we are working hard to strengthen our position. Our success comes from a great team with the right skills and experience. In the short term, we are focused on improving our facilities, strengthening our systems, processes, and quality output. In the long term, we are dedicated to enhancing our culture and developing the engineering side of the business. Our goal is to offer a full range of services to our customers, including design, drafting, fabrication, and installation.

Who are your clients?

Over time, the business has built a strong client base. My team and I now maintain and improve these relationships. We also seek new opportunities regularly.

Based in Brisbane, we handle much of our work in Queensland. However, as specialist fabricators for the Power, Water, and Civil/Construction sectors, we frequently work with clients in Melbourne and Sydney. Additionally, we send work across the country to WA and the Northern Territories. Thus, we serve clients Australia-wide, excluding Tasmania. Our diverse client base includes small builders, mid-tier firms, and large Tier 1 and Tier 2 organizations.

What’s unique about DWW in your eyes?

Firstly, DWW’s longevity is a key factor. Celebrating 60 years this year is a major milestone. I’m proud to be the third owner. Our client base is first-rate, built on decades of strong relationships and excellent business practices. We have the right assets and a skilled team to deliver quality work.

Walking the shop floor, my inner engineer gets excited about our work, especially for the Power industry. Our expertise in high voltage and power transmission sub-stations is well-regarded. Companies often seek our opinion and expertise for their projects due to our strong history in this sector.

Speaking to your younger self, what advice would you give him – in hindsight?

Take the leap! My only regret is not starting earlier as a business owner. I missed a few opportunities, which I now regret. Even if those ventures had failed, the experience would have been valuable. Remember, you can’t buy knowledge, especially technical expertise. It took me 20 years to gain that knowledge. Be prepared to work hard, as I did.

I take pride in being a business owner. Watching us grow and achieve our goals is deeply satisfying. Improving each day and receiving positive feedback from clients is incredibly rewarding for everyone involved.
